Update from the hospital - Rachel’s OK

· Her surgeon cautioned us first-thing this morning that she was a high-risk candidate for surgery, due to her elevated heart rate (~130) and her out-of-whack electrolytes. But the two teams of doctors both recommended proceeding, with the risk of not doing surgery being greater. We agreed.
· She was in for about 3 hours.
· Debrief from her surgeon:
o Rach was not especially stable during the surgery, so they had to get the main stuff done and get done. She did have to get a transfusion, and will need another.
o They removed her tumor, her right ovary (“the size of a cantaloupe”), and her left ovary.
o They removed some additional smaller tumors from her lower abdomen.
o They held off on the additional small tumors in her upper abdomen, as well as a hysterectomy, in the interest of time.
o They were able to extubate her, so she’s breathing on her own.
o She’s in Recovery right now; she’ll be in the ICU for at least a day. Duration of future hospital stay TBD.
o The preliminary diagnosis is ovarian cancer, but that’s still tentative until they do the workup of the tumor.
· The plan at this point is to recover from this acute illness, do chemo, and possibly do another surgery later to remove additional tumors. This is highly dependent on how she responds to chemo.
